Strategy Facilitation

A key benefit of Justworks is the collection of benefits they offer to small companies’ employees (to their benefit). Over my tenure, I designed the original plan selection for companies to offer health insurance plans to employees; led the redesign of our “benefits center” for employees overview of all of their benefits; oversaw the design of contributions configuration with designer Vincent Iadevaia; and eventually oversaw the redesign of a more robust plan package selection for employers with designer Geoff Olegario.

Prioritizing the employee

Typically at Justworks, and with most HR information systems, nearly all the effort is put into the admin experience. When we first launched medical benefits with Empire, we flipped that in order to enable the most seamless experience for the most people. The complexities of the admin experience would come later, to start we’d focus on simplifying and explaining the complexities for employees so they can make the best decision for themselves and their families.

Play, but not gamification

How an employer chooses to contribute to their employees’ medical benefits is COMPLICATED - everyone does it slightly differently. Our key insight was rather than create a wizard with some number of templates, let’s let the user play. Let them see the numbers ripple through options just like they would in a spreadsheet. This allows the admin to much better understand how they can help employees afford good medical insurance.

Our customers’ love language? Spreadsheets.

As we matured as a design team, a key insight into our users behavior was that they live in spreadsheets, they feel comfortable in spreadsheets, please, they just want a gosh darn spreadsheet. So let’s create tabular data with strong typographic hierarchy that’s easy to parse. And when we can, let’s let them download the data not just as a pdf, but an actual spreadsheet - with the actual prices! Little user-centric touches like that lead Justworks to the highest customer satisfaction rating in the industry.
